Perfection

"I am God Almighty, walk habitually before Me, and be thou perfect." Genesis 17:1

"Ye shall therefore be perfect, as your Father who is in the heavens is perfect." Matthew 5:48

"Perfect" means inerrant and sinless, but it also means complete and mature. An emphasis on one definition over another is detrimental, for they all are commanded of us. The bar for us is set at perfection, in all its meanings. It is our utter failure to clear this bar that demonstrates our desperate need for the Savior. Still, our assured failure to reach perfection on our own does not relieve us of our duty to strive toward it with the Holy Spirit's help. Any shortage of effort merely compounds our failure. Just as athletes strive for perfection of their skills, working toward ever greater challenges, so we too work toward moral perfection and ever greater oneness with our Lord.
